Our Physicians and Physician Assistants

 

Dr. Joseph L. Lukins is a native of Louisville, Kentucky. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University in 1965. He completed medical school at the University of Kentucky in 1969. The wild west, snow skiing, and a well-recognized residency program led to internship and orthopaedic residency at the University of Utah, completed in 1974. Dr. Lukins fulfilled his military obligation by practicing orthopaedic surgery at the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell, Kentucky from 1974-1976. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1975. After arrival in Danville in 1976, he developed the hosital's programs in arthroscopic and joint replacement surgeries. Dr. Lukins has two children.

Dr. Shelby T. White was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. He developed his interest in athletics at Bryan Station High School and obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky in 1976. After graduating from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1980, he completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery there in 1985. Dr. White received certification by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1987. He has been the team physician for Boyle County High School since his arrival in Danville in 1985. He is married and has two daughters.

Dr. Jeremy W. Tarter was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a graduate of Danville High School and Centre College in 1989. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1994. Afterwards, he completed an internship in general surgery (1995) and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Vanderbuilt University (1999). He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 2002. Dr. Tarter pursued his interests in foot and ankle and sports medicine surgery by accepting fellowships at the Institute of Bone and Joint Disorders in Phoenix, Arizona, completing these in 2000 and returning to his hometown of Danville. He is married and has two sons.

Dr. Charles C. Key is from Williamsburg, KY. He graduated valedictorian from Williamsburg High School and graduated summa cum laude from the University of the Cumberlands in 2002. He was a state champion in high school track and seven time NAIA All-American in college. He graduated with high honors from University of Kentucky, College of Medicine, in 2007. He was commissioned into the US Army and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. He was then deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After deployment, Dr. Key returned to Kentucky at Fort Knox where he served as an orthopaedic surgeon at Ireland Army Hospital. He was certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2014. He currently lives with his wife in Danville.

Dr. D. Jeffrey Covell was born in Frederick, Maryland. He attended Kansas State University and received a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and Industry in 2004. He studied at the University of Kentucky College of Public Health and earned a master’s degree in 2006. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Kentucky School of Medicine in 2010. Afterwards, he completed an internship and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at The University of Kentucky Medical Center (2015). Dr. Covell completed fellowship training at the OrthoCarolina Foot and Ankle Institute in Charlotte, NC in 2016. He is board eligible by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery for 2017.

His primary area of concentration is in foot and ankle surgery with special interests in total ankle replacement, trauma, post-traumatic arthritic joint reconstruction and fusion, complex congenital or acquired foot deformity, Charcot reconstruction, tendon disorders, bunion and hammer toe correction, arthroscopy and sports related injuries.

He is married and has one son.

Jeremy Caudill, MSPAS, PA-C was born in Lexington, KY and raised in the hills of eastern Kentucky. He completed his undergraduate curriculum at the University of Kentucky where he was a varsity football player and later signed with two NFL teams. He returned to UK where he earned his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies degree. He is a board certified physician assistant who's passion for sports and medicine led him to a career in orthopedics. Jeremy lives in Jessamine Co. with his wife and two sons.
